WORLD YOUTH DAY

On the feast of St Francis Assisi it was announced that World Youth Day Lisbon 2023 has been set for August 1-6. At the same time, the Pope's Message for this year's World Youth Day at the local level that will be held on November 21, coinciding with the feast of Christ the King, has been released.

World Youth Day, WYD, is an international gathering of young people with the Pope that has been held since 1985. The last meeting took place in Panama in 2019 and there it was announced that Lisbon would be in 2022 the next city to host the event. Later, it was decided to delay it by one year because of the pandemic caused by the COVID-19 virus.

Local churches Youth Day

The international encounters are held every three years in different countries and with the presence of the Pope. Annually WYD is celebrated in local churches on a specific date, which until now was Palm Sunday. Last year, on the Solemnity of Christ the King, Pope Francis wanted to relaunch the celebration of WYD in the particular Churches and announced that, from 2021 onwards, it will take place on the Sunday of the Solemnity of Christ the King. His message for this feast, which will occur on November 21, was recently made public. The bishops have the faculty to change the date in their dioceses.

Pope Francis′ Message 2021 has as a motto “Stand up. I appoint you as a witness of what you have seen.” (cf. Acts 26:16 ). It is centered in the conversion and testimony of the apostle Paul. Please clcik her to read or download the Message. clic rosa

The Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life offers in several languages pastoral guidelines for the celebration of World Youth Day in the Particular Churches.

Way to Lisbon

After the date of WYD Lisbon 2023 was made public, on the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, other aspects of the preparation continue to be set in motion. In January of this year, the official anthem was made public, and last year the logo and other symbols of the event were made public.

Young volunteers are being mobilized in the host country and youth groups can be formed in every diocese of the world to prepare for the event with pastoral activities and local meetings.

Also the Associations, such as the Teresian Association, are inserted in this journey with young people from the diocesan level or as entities, participating in the pastoral plan that is designed and especially in the development of the preparation time and then in the event itself.
