Last Saturday, August 14, the earth shook again in Haiti. A new earthquake, with a magnitude 7.2 on the Richter scale, has hit hard an already economically and institutionally battered country. To date, the death toll has risen to more than 1,300, and the number of injured exceeds 5,700. These are shocking figures, but the consequences of this earthquake go far beyond that.
In a country with weak infrastructure, a weak government, and a battered economy, the consequences of the earthquake translate into a lack of access to basic services, drinking water, transportation, medical care, electricity... The earthquake has demolished hundreds of buildings and, most importantly, the dreams and hopes of a Haitian population sadly accustomed to living between natural disasters and economic and health crises.
